The Scottish Highlands

On our way to the Isle of Skye, one of the Inner Hebredes Islands, we travelled through some of the most rugged of the Scottish landscapes. We joked about the atlas not showing very many roads in the highlands until we realized there aren't very many roads in the highlands. The rugged beauty of the highlands is worth the trip.

The few animals seen in the highlands are sheep, of course, and the Highland Cow. Both male and female cows have horns and shaggy coats. The sheep are left to graze almost unattended throughout the winter. No wonder they develop such thick coats of wool.

There are very few trees in the highlands. Some of the hills
have waterfalls like this one.

The waterfalls fill the streams that run through the valleys.
